Many thanks to the Gardai from Terenure Garda station for their recent attendance at out AGM. Below are some of the tips on improving our security they provided us with.
Home Security:
Fit a door viewer and a door chain/limiter. These will allow you to safely check callers and retain control over security.
Front and rear doors and windows should be kept locked day and night. Keep a list of emergency numbers (including Terenure Garda Station) that you can refer to quickly, if required, e.g. family, neighbours, Gardaí, medical or fire service.
Bogus Callers:
Do not open the door to anyone before you’ve checked who it is and what they want. Use your door viewer and chain/limiter.
Check identification, where appropriate. Do not let anyone you are suspicious of into your home. Do not open the door. Ask the caller to leave their details or business card and you can call them back later if you wish. A genuine caller will leave their details. Call Terenure Garda Station if you suspect the caller to be bogus.
Do not leave strangers unattended at your doorstep.
Ensure your back door is locked when you answer a call at the front door.
Bicycle Owners:
Keep your bicycle locked up at all times when not in use. A minimum guide price for the lock is 10% of the value of the bicycle. Take a picture of your bicycle and record the serial number to assist in its recovery should it be stolen. Always report bicycle theft to the Gardai.
Gardeners:
Keep your doors locked while gardening.
In addition to the above, they emphasised the importance of watching out for elderly neighbours.
